Celebrating two decades of incredible music moments on the White Isle, the 2019 Ibiza season has seen the COCOON crew seriously push the boat out to mark the occasion. As well as putting on a host of fierce techno fiestas featuring the brand’s most beloved musical family members, founder and turntable icon Sven Väth has gone all out to bring some veritable electronic music legends to the island. And after cutting the ribbon on the #Cocoon20 season with an epic Underworld live show at the world-famous Ushuaïa Ibiza, he returned to the Playa d’en Bossa party palace this month with genre-defining trailblazers Kraftwerk.
Falling on Friday the 13th– a day-and-date combination traditionally associated with bad fortune – as huge black cloud formations darkened the skies of the White Isle we began to fear for the worst. Indeed, the heavens didn’t hold back as they unleashed a torrent of rain onto Ibiza – but that didn’t stop the extended COCOON family, oh no! With US techno talent Seth Troxler and, of course, Papa Sven himself billed to warm up for Kraftwerk, staying at home was simply not an option. Bringing their globetrotting 3D live show to Ibiza, the momentous event made music history as the pioneering German act played their first ever White Isle gig.
After battling our way through flooded streets and weather-induced roadblocks – while anxiously keeping an eye on Facebook to check that the party was still in full swing – by the time we arrived in Playa d’en Bossa, as if by miracle the rain had stopped with minutes to spare before the legendary German act was due to take to Ushuaïa Ibiza’s festival-size stage. Popping on the 3D glasses we were handed at the entrance, we wiggled our way through the (slightly damp) crowd to find a spot right at the front.
Kraftwerk don’t – or shouldn’t – need any introduction to electronic music lovers worth their salt. Originally formed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in 1969, their experimental and futuristic sound went on to pioneer new genres as well as inspiring their musical peers for decades to come. Known for their robotic beats, distorted vocals and imaginative use of the synthesizer, Krafwerk has been attributed with paving the way for house and techno music, as well as influencing greats such as David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Madonna and Daft Punk to name a few. So it didn’t come as a surprise to spot music selectors like fellow countryman Dixon in the crowd as the curtain finally went up on the iconic four-piece’s 3D live show at Ushuaïa Ibiza.
With such a huge reputation, the band didn’t need to rely on fuss or fanfare to announce their arrival and made a modest entrance as they took their places behind four orderly lined-up mix tables. Cool, calm and collected, over the course of the next two hours they treated us to all of their greatest tracks accompanied by striking 3D visuals. Popular 1978 hit ‘The Model’ was accompanied by retro black and white film footage, while the equally iconic ‘Autobahn’ projected a larger than life car radio and motorway lanes onto a giant screen.
With swirling music keys seemingly floating off into the night sky and trippy geometric patterns coming towards us, combined with the mesmerising 3D effects Kraftwerk’s vocoder and synth-laden pop melodies were brought to life in a spectacular example of immersive entertainment. Even the weather behaved itself as the music icons worked their way through an immense set list that included all-time favourites such as ‘Musique Non Stop’, ‘Radio Activity’, ‘Boing Boom Tschack’ and ‘We Are The Robots’. As, one by one, Kraftwerk left the stage accompanied by raucous applause, it was an undeniable goosebump moment.
Surprising us with so many once-in-a-lifetime musical treats in its 20thanniversary year, it’s clear that the COCOON crew is far from resting on its laurels. In fact, their #Cocoon20 Kraftwerk 3D extravaganza scored them the accolade of Best Ibiza Music Event supported by Pure Ibiza Radio at the 2019 DJ Awards. If you’re in Ibiza this month, you still have one more chance to catch the COCOON crew on the White Isle at The Grand Closing Party at Amnesia on Monday, September 30th. We have a feeling that for Sven Väth and his team, the best is yet to come!
