Ibiza Legend and Industry Icon Has Passed Away Leaving a Memorable Legacy

Today news of Robert Miles passing at 47 years old has begun to filter across the dance music industry. Very sad news indeed and his sizeable impression will continue to shadow the scene eternally.

At the age of 47, Robert Miles – who is best known globally for the 90’s trance song “Children” – has died after battling stage 4 metastatic cancer over the past nine months.

Back in the mid-90’s, when trance music was mostly underground and rarely mainstream, Robert Miles came onto the scene with debut single “Children” and soared to the top of many charts around the world. It was a ground-breaking success which launched this DJ into global fame.

His follow-up singles performed just as well with “Fable”, “One On One” and “Freedom” all going on to have international success. The latter two were collaborations with Maria Nayler and Kathy Sledge, respectively.

Just last year, Robert Miles, whose real name was Roberto Concina, had been performing at Heart Ibiza and had been influential within the community, founding popular radio station OpenLab.

He was born in Switzerland, to Italian parents, and later grew up in Fagagna – where his parents moved to when he was a young boy. In the 80’s, he worked as a DJ in Italian clubs and at radios, before launching his own pirate radio station in 1990.

He’s career saw him release six studio albums, his debut, “Dreamland”, of which charted globally; three remix albums, and a whole range of singles and remix EPs. He also won several awards including a Brit Award for Best International Male Newcomer in 1997.

Tributes have come from some of the best and most well-known DJs in the world. His close friend and colleague Joe T Vanelli paid a tribute, saying: “The tragic news of the death of a very talented artist of our time, makes me incredulous and upset.” He went on to say: “I will miss the fights, brawls, criticism, judgements but especially your talent in finding sounds and melodies unparalleled.”

Radio 1 DJ and internationally-known, Pete Tong, also paid tribute with the following tweet:
