Miami music week; attended by the creme-de-la-creme of DJs, producers and electronic music industry representatives from all over the Globe. So what is MMW doing for diversity in the music industry?
HE.SHE.THEY made their MMW debut. The globally recognised event series and record label known for its inclusivity; “a place without prejudice for people to be people”. HE.SHE.THEY brought world-renowned electronic music artists Maya Jane Coles, Ellen Allien, DJ Tennis, Cassy, Chloe Caillet, Honeyluv, Uniiqu3, Danny Daze and more to Miami.
LP Giobbi and co-founded non-profit organisation ‘Femme House’ were hosting a panel around diversity in the music industry. Giobbi stated that it’s important for her to ‘set intentions on what (we are all) doing out in Miami in the first place’. The panel invited representatives from Spotify, UTA, Diplo’s higherground label and others to discuss allyship and equity in dance music. The panel was well attended and received positive feedback from attendees, some stating it was a ‘highlight’ of their week.
Feedback from other attendees of MMW spoke about giving back and using the platform to create a more inclusive environment. Dim Mak set up an opportunity for emerging artists to submit their demos allowing up-and-coming talent from diverse backgrounds to have their music heard by various labels and receive feedback there and then.
High hopes follow MMW for continued awareness around diversity in the music industry and growing equality on the dancefloor.
