Hi Canguru, how are you?
Good, thanks.
Tell us about your upcoming projects for the months ahead.
Well, I’ve been preparing my first ever guest mixes. This is exciting as I’ve never done this before. I’m finishing my first one now and have got another three to get ready. I am also releasing the second single from my new Trap/Alt-Hip-Hop album that will be leading to the release of the full album.
Have you been working to integrate any new styles or sounds into your new productions? What can fans expect to hear in terms of your sonic direction in your upcoming tracks?
Well, I’ve been developing my DJ skills a lot lately and this has really inspired me to experiment more with remixes and sampling. I have a lot of new music in the process of getting finished as well. I think my next releases will be much darker sounding with an overarching Electronica and Techno vibe to it.
What about outside of music, do you have any goals or projects that you’re hoping to achieve this year?
Well, I also produce my own artwork and I am preparing a collection of recycled paper bag artworks that I intend to exhibit in Berlin and other places as well. My plan is to perform a Canguru set as part of the exhibition as well.
How do you hope to develop your craft this year? Are there any new techniques or pieces of equipment you’re wanting to master?
Well, as I mentioned before, I have been learning to DJ lately. I have bought a Traktor S4 DJ controller and have been learning how to use it in depth. The plan being to perform live with it at some point soon. I also would like to experiment a lot more with sampling techniques, acapellas, instrumental samples, and remixes. There is so much fun to be had and a world of possibilities to play around with in this field.
Have you been drawing inspiration and influence from any new styles, genres, or artists recently?
I am a big fan of Trentemøller, especially his early electro-sounding tracks. I’ve also recently discovered a cool electronic Dutch duo called Weval. I really like the sound of Tinlicker as well. I discovered this other Dutch duo live last year in Berlin. Very cool Techno electronic music!
Do you hope to collaborate with any artists or other producers within your projects this year?
Yes, for sure! I have been collaborating with a very good friend of mine on and off on new music. We have a full album worth of material in the pipeline. I am also looking forward to collaborating with more guest singers. I am always on the lookout for other artists and producers to collaborate with.
What do you hope listeners will take away from your music and projects in 2024?
Well, I guess I’ve always aspired to develop my own Canguru signature kind of sound and it is something I am constantly working on. I have experimented a lot with various styles and genres over the years, but in the end, I guess my aspirations are getting more finely tuned and deeply rooted in Electronic Music. I hope that listeners will get a clearer idea of what the Canguru sound really is in 2024.
Can you share with us any of your plans when it comes to connecting further with your fans? Do you hope to perform this year, or do you have plans to grow your interactions via social media?
I am constantly working towards building a solid fanbase online first. It is all taking some time, but I guess this is mainly because I am still searching and developing my Canguru sound. I plan to wait until I have a lot more releases under my belt before I start booking shows. I think it is still a bit premature to start booking shows. The plan is to book shows for next summer’s 2025 festival season.
What are you most excited about when it comes to continuing on your musical journey this year?
I am really getting into DJ mixing and doing remixes. I want to keep developing this skill until I am fully confident performing behind decks. My plan is to incorporate other instruments that I play as part of my DJ set as well such as the saxophone and MIDI sequencers like the Push 2. Following this, I want to invite guest artists to perform with me on stage in a band setup. I miss performing in a band and it is something I want to get back into as well.
