Hard techno is taking the global music and event industry by storm. It has evolved into a cultural movement that includes fashion and several lifestyle trends. Fuelled by a young and highly engaged community, this sub-culture is here to stay.
During this conversation with experts on ADE Wednesday, they explore the origin and impact of hard techno from both an artist and event angle in a fireside chat. Sara Landry, a self-taught producer, audio engineer, and DJ known for her dark, driving, and divinely feminine brand of industrial techno, speaks with with Michelle Verhoef, the General Manager of Verknipt, the world’s biggest hard techno organisation. As well as being an electronic music industry maverick, she’s also paving the way for the hard-techno movement – pushing what has long been considered subversive into popular culture – and women in music on a global scale.
From Niche to Next Level with Indira Paganotto
What does it take to get from a niche to the next level? This conversation will explore this topic from multiple angles, and all participants have hands-on experience in taking a niche to the next level.
Let’s start with the artist’s perspective. What was Indira Paganotto’s massive road to success? How did she find her identity as an artist? What are some of the core strengths that allowed her to grow? And at what point in her career did she realise she had all the ingredients needed to become one of the biggest acts in the scene by staying authentic? During this panel on ADE Thursday, she takes the audience on a journey through these questions with her.
Ilja Reiman is the originator of the ‘Gabber’ movement and joins her on stage. The movement became massively popular quickly, much like hard techno nowadays. The scene has since greatly impacted music and culture in general; Gabber even made it to the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year.
Last but not least is Reza Fathi, founder of Verknipt, who has an entirely different story. During COVID, they reinvented the identity of the Verknipt concept and went all-in on hard techno, which has landed them the biggest hard techno show in the world recently in the Amsterdam ArenA. Back then, rebranding to hard techno was a massive gamble since the genre was still considered a niche. Now, it’s gone to the next level.
