Now available on digital platforms, Tribute is the latest full-length project from Krishna Baby, released by Brazilian imprint Sorry Daddy Records. The album is a posthumous collaboration with DJ and producer Cícero Chaves — also known as Smutty and Funky — who passed away in 2021. Built from unreleased studio sessions left by Chaves and later developed by Krishna Baby, the album is both a memorial and a forward-thinking piece of electronic music.
Reworking archived material inherited from his longtime creative partner, Krishna Baby approached the project through a hybrid production process — combining digital manipulation with live instrumentation. Drawing heavily from 1990s Rio de Janeiro street party culture, the sound fuses Electro, Miami Bass, Funk Melody, and elements of Tech House, translating the raw energy of the baile scene into contemporary club sonics.
With eight tracks in total, the album opens with “Shake On Me” — a previously released single that signalled the project’s sonic direction: booming 808s, distorted vocals, vintage synths and a distinct ‘80s flair. Throughout the album, vocal fragments, FX samples and groove-driven synth arrangements showcase a dialogue between heritage and experimentation, echoing the language once explored by the duo’s former project, Freakslum.
As the name suggests, Tribute is a work of remembrance. After receiving Cícero’s personal archive, Krishna Baby committed to preserving the sonic identity the two developed across more than a decade of collaboration. The result is a cohesive yet exploratory record that reconnects with the roots of Brazil’s electronic underground while projecting it onto new terrain.
“We were hugely inspired by street culture, Rio’s bailes, and the favela soundsystems — listening to Miami Bass, Electro, Break, and Funk Melody from early on,” explains Krishna Baby. “This album blends that past with our vision of timeless grooves, always keeping the feel of the dancefloor alive while playing with textures from both old-school and current gear.”
A DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist active since the early 2000s, Krishna Baby is known for bridging urban Brazilian genres with leftfield electronic approaches. His work spans everything from Electrophunk to Techno and experimental Bass music. In both club settings and live performances, he continues to carve out space for hybrid forms rooted in both cultural memory and sonic innovation.
With Tribute, Krishna closes the circle that began in 2023, when he first began revisiting the unfinished material of Smutty and Funky. The album crystallises that process and reaffirms their shared contribution to the evolution of Brazil’s underground electronic music.
