In 2024, the minds behind Greece’s premiere beachfront escape, Cariocas Beach Bar, revealed Burger Disco Club – a contemporary diner meets speakeasy listening bar and late-night dancehall in the heart of Athens.
Situated close to Constitution Square, and less than a minute’s walk from Ermou Street — the busiest commercial street in downtown Athens, and the 14th most expensive shopping street in the world — Burger Disco Club is a hidden speakeasy-like experience, and the only venue of its kind in the city. It occupies a deftly renovated subterranean space, its neat layout seamlessly pairing casual dining and bespoke cocktails with late-night disco hedonism, and boasts sleek interior design, a custom handcrafted soundsystem, and a community of diverse and in-the-know music lovers.
The first names of the venue’s sophomore season have now been revealed – kicking off on September 26 running through into the new year, the programme features a wealth of international performers including Les Yeux Orange, Heidi Lawden, Hercules and Love Affair, Louie Vega, Omar S, Luke Una, Lakuti, Tama Sumo, Antal, Vladimir Ivkovic, and Ivan Smagghe, alongside the foremost in local talent. Fridays at the venue lean into housier sounds whilst Saturdays foreground disco — Sundays are reserved for special guests and Mondays for live jazz, whilst Wednesdays and Thursdays are earmarked to introduce pop-up events, gatherings, and parties with likeminded communities and collectives.
The new season will also see the opening of Ghost Sake Bar, a hybrid speakeasy listening bar experience with an East Asia-inspired menu, and music from guest selectors. The signature ‘Cariocas Soundsystem’ has been in development since 1998 at both Cariocas and its sister venues, a three-decade-long pursuit in painstaking trial and error and reverse engineering – searching, pairing, and fine tuning equipment up and down the audio chain — testimonials of Cariocas’ lauded booth and system include the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vega, David Morales, François K, Gilles Peterson, Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, and more. Ghost Sake Bar will be as attentively equipped with its own system crafted from vintage Japanese amps and US and UK-made audio sources, that perfectly complement the bespoke Bill Pal cabs and speakers.
The season will also see fresh menus for both BDC and Ghost Sake Bar, all curated by lauded culinary talent and Greek MasterChef alum Chris Glossidis – a cook driven by both the simplicity and richness of Greek food culture, and his passion for Asian gastronomy. Furthermore, opening hours have been extended, and the listening bar and kitchens will be open daily from 6pm, inviting attendees to wind down – and back up again – at their leisure.
Combining curated cuisine and beverage offerings with an authentic underground clubbing experience, Burger Disco Club was built on the impeccable and longstanding reputation of its sister venue, Cariocas Beach Bar. Ringing in a bold new chapter in Athens’ nocturnal narrative, the venue’s first season saw performances from a wealth of discerning talent across the electronic music spectrum, both in the venue itself and via select collaborations and stage takeovers – these include the likes of Luke Una, Felix Dickinson, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Louie Vega, Chez Damier, DJ Deep, Lakuti, David Morales, Hercules & Love Affair, Daniel Plessow aka MCDE, Massimiliano Pagliara, Prins Thomas, Maurice Fulton, Roi Perez, Carl Craig, Vladimir Ivkovic, Lena Willikens, Ivan Smagghe, Daniele Baldelli, Roman Flügel, and more.
Both Cariocas and Burger Disco Club are a part of the Papageorge family, a legacy established in 1981 with the café that shares its namesake. The café has seen several transformations over the years, including a New York-style café, a multi-level nightclub, a traditional pub, and notably was the first venue in Athens to feature a DJ booth equipped with Technics MK2 turntables — it was also the first music diner-style joint to introduce the classic American burger culture of the South West USA to the Greek public. Founders and DJs Panos and Petros Papaeleftheriou are the brothers behind Papageorge, paving the way for Cariocas, for international music festival Odyssia, and ultimately for Burger Disco Club.
Cariocas Beach Bar was established in 1998, famed for a sense of community and togetherness nurtured for over 25 years. Perched on the shoreline, the venue is meticulously crafted from Swedish wood and stubble, and the very same family that drove in the first nails still runs it today. For almost 30 years Cariocas has led the house and disco scene in the region with its innovative events, inclusive vibe, and exquisite sound. All of these values hold true in Burger Disco Club, which — with over 40 years experience in restaurateurship and music curation to draw from — invites epicures and music lovers alike visiting Athens to join them on a sensory journey through taste, sound, and atmosphere. Featuring both international legends and spotlighting the foremost in regional talent, this unique fusion of eats and beats has made Burger Disco Club a destination unlike any other in Athens.
