BBC Radio 1 have announced the recipients of the Annie Nightingale Pioneers for 2026, which will celebrate Jaz Imsky, Kara and Mia Koden for their impact on the global dance/electronic scene. The annual scheme launched in 2021 celebrates the legacy of the first female DJ and longest-standing presenter on Radio 1. Each year, they recognise female and non-binary artists making waves in electronic music, continuing her mission to support new artists, independent voices and fresh ideas.
This year’s recipients showcase diversity within the underground dance scene. Singapore-born Jaz Imsky, who grew up in London, has made a name for herself as a bass-heavy artist. She has released on reputable labels such as Deep Medi and has played iconic venues including Fabric, The Warehouse Project, Boomtown and Outlook. Her multicultural influences and sound system roots mean she has performed internationally, throughout Asia and Europe.
Jaz Imsky says: “Music is the one thing that brings people together, uniting us beyond belief or background. So, in today’s deeply divided world, creating and sharing it matters more than ever. Inspired by Annie Nightingale’s call to action, ‘Don’t wish! Do something.’ I am truly honoured to be selected and dedicate this mix to her.”
Kara has emerged as one of drum and bass’ rising stars. Having played at events such as Tomorrowland, Glastonbury and Boomtown, she created her own independent label and event series in 2024 called The Foundation to celebrate jungle and drum and bass. She has an exciting schedule for 2027 with a nationwide tour and more solo releases.
Kara says: “I’m incredibly honoured to have been selected as an Annie Nightingale Pioneer of Dance Music. To have my work and contribution to the scene recognised in this way means so much to me. Annie paved the way for so many women in dance music, and I hope to continue her legacy through my show by championing the next generation of talent, supporting emerging artists and giving a platform to the voices shaping the future of dance music.”
Mia Koden is a South Sudanese British DJ/Producer from South London who has gained recognition for her bass-heavy and genre-blending music. She has released on Ilian Tape, was crowned Resident Advisor Breakthrough Artist Of The Year in 2024 and was nominated for Breakthrough Producer at DJ Mag Best Of British Awards. She has a personal connection to Annie as well, having worked as an assistant producer on her BBC Radio 1 show in 2018.
Mia Koden says: “Annie was bold, passionate and cared so deeply about music – a true legend in this. I briefly worked as her assistant producer on her BBC Radio 1 show back in 2018 with Martha and never expected to be on the other side, so it’s a lovely surprise to be picked for this. I’ll use the show to spotlight other artists with big bassy tunes, just like Annie always did.”
They will each play a unique mix on BBC Radio 1 on Saturday 7th November between 11pm-2am. Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says the scheme helps ensure Annie’s influence continues to make doors open for new artists.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, says: “Annie was a true pioneer who opened doors for generations of DJs and artists. I’m proud we can continue her legacy through this initiative, giving emerging talent a platform on Radio 1. This year’s recipients are a brilliant example of the talent that is shaping the future of dance and electronic music.”
