Inspired by a 90s anti-gravity racing game he loved as a kid, Tota’s new album, City Racer, dives into the story of an imagined character in a futuristic world; a racing driver who leaves home to compete in a high-stakes international tournament. Along the way, she wrestles with loss, love, and the weight of her past, all while trying to keep it together in her career. Tota recorded and produced the entire album himself over a year and a half, even using AI to turn his own vocals into a female voice for the protagonist. “It’s practically a soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist,” he says, describing an increasingly cinematic approach to composing music. Inspired by 90s electronic music and rave, and spanning techno, house, UK garage, drum and bass and even dream pop, City Racer is a story of looking back, longing, heartbreak, and perseverance.
Tota is a Barcelona-based producer whose music examines nostalgia and memory, creating introspective and meditative spaces for reflection. Making music since childhood, Tota’s journey began on a Yamaha keyboard, and developed through the years, exploring ambient and experimenting with dubstep, soon realising that the music could not be tied to one genre, his sound is guided more by mood and story.
