Solarstone Reimagines JB Dunckel’s ‘Dolphin’ For The Dancefloor

Sometimes the inspiration for the most memorable ideas in electronic music can come from unexpected places. This time round, Solarstone found his inspiration for ‘Dophin’ in an unexpected place – the airport departure lounge.  It actually started with a JB Dunckel track by the legendary French electronic duo AIR.

“Sitting in Schiphol, I Shazam’d it; and discovered ’Dolphin’ and ‘Paranormal Musicality’ (Dunckel’s 2024 solo album from which it’s taken). Having not heard much of JB’s music since ‘Everybody Hertz’, a while back, it took all of five seconds to get sucked back into it.”

Solarstone was just messing around with this initially. Described as “a loose cover”, Rich started to reimagine the original piano and string arrangements into something more electronic using the rich tones of analogue synths. It eventually made the cut into his DJ sets and became an unknown weapon. Eventually JB Dunckel heard the track and got in contact. He said, “I love it!” So the track was set to go from an improvised studio jam to an official release. Whilst the original remains quite deep and cinematic, Solarstone gave it more of a modern twist to make it more dance-floor ready. But there is a deeper message within the track. Rich feels that Dolphin gives an alternative to the current trance scene.

“That”, he says, “feels ever more flooded with cheesy bastardisations of 90s trance hits”.
“Instead of cheap nostalgia, ‘Dolphin’ offers the opportunity for something less obvious and, I feel, more emotionally complex.”

Sometimes the best dance-floor moments come from unexpected places.
